Please take advantage of the fact that you are abroad. Alot of people cannot afford to go or can't go for other reasons. I say this not to be mean, but as a person who would really like for you to enjoy your time abroad. Stop moping, go outside, take a walk, explore the people, start a random conversation. You won't learn Portuguese from only your host father and his maid, so i suggest that you find people who want to help you learn the language.

Also, don't hang up too much on the whole i'm black and abroad thing, it'll give you a screwed up perception of where you are/the people around you. You'll think that people are staring at you because you're black, as oppose to the fact that you are an American and probably speaking English so they are more fascinated by that. This is not to say that racism doesnt exist, just to say that it exists so much as we make a huge deal out of it (if that makes any sense. It does in my head.)

In closing, please just try and have a good time! When you graduate from college you ain't (stronger than isn't) getting this opportunity to travel on your parents or the government's tab.

Yes it's overwhelming, but I can't find any nicer way to say it... get over it and enjoy!
